Anthony Bernier, PhD
Project Director
Dr. Anthony Bernier developed the original space and service plan for the Los Angeles Public Library’s acclaimed TeenS’cape Department, the first public library space designed exclusively to meet the developmental needs of adolescents. He served as a Young Adult Specialist Librarian for 10 years with that organization and subsequently inaugurated and managed a new Teen Services Department for nearly 5 years as Director of Teen Services for the Oakland Public Library, and joined the faculty of San Jose State University’s School of Library and Information Science in 2005, where he teaches courses on library service to young people from a critical youth studies perspective. Beyond designing and implementing a variety of innovative library service models for young adults, Dr. Bernier has published widely used and cited articles in professional literature and continues to write, train, and consult with architects and public agencies on teen spaces and library services. He has served in many leadership capacities for the American Library Association’s Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) and teaches cadres of YALSA’s training bureau trainers. Dr. Bernier’s primary research interests explore public space equity for young adults and the administration of equitable library services with them. He received his Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Irvine, in 2001, where his doctoral dissertation addressed changing notions of public space in 20th century urban America. He lives in Oakland and rides a Honda Nighthawk 750.
